Cheapskate’s French Toast with Stale Buns Ingredients and Substitutions
Here is what you will need to turn your brick-strong buns into exquisite French toast.
- Buns: Check for buns that are 1-2 days old. Even if they’re as hard as bricks, a good soak in the egg mixture will make them divinely tender and juicy.
- Eggs: Because French toast without eggs is just toast.
- Butter: This will make sure your French toast is fried to perfection. Unsalted butter is my preference.
- Cinnamon & nutmeg: These add a spicy kick, and pair perfectly with maple syrup.
- Fresh cream or ice-cream: Either one of these decadent toppings works well. Or even better, add both!
- Maple syrup: I love the rich, distinct flavour of maple syrup, but any syrup will do. If you don’t have any syrup, honey works just as well for that additional sweetness but with a slightly different taste.
- No buns, no problem: Just use the ends of the loaf of bread. Stale bread works just as well.
- Toppings: Open those pantry cupboards and let your kids go wild. You can add anything your heart or theirs desires: nuts, sprinkles, chocolate buttons, coconut flakes, berries—the list is endless.
Top Tips For This Cheapskate’s French Toast with Stale Buns
Why Cheapskate, you ask? Well, this is the term my kids use to describe me because I’m always hunting for local deals and sales, never missing a chance to save.
- Always be on the lookout: Look for discounts and offers in the grocery aisles. Don’t forget to check the bakery department in the evenings for heavily discounted buns, sometimes up to 90% off!
- Make smart choices: This is where I find the Too Good To Go app an absolute must. for a convenient way to find out what’s on sale nearby and score some great deals on your favorite foods.
- Whisk your eggs well: This helps mix in air for a smoother texture ensuring a French toast that’s light and fluffy. So give them a good whisk before adding your other ingredients.
- Make sure to soak those buns: Because you are using stale buns, they need to be soaked thoroughly in the egg mixture. I recommend 5 minutes at minimum, but this will depend on the thickness and staleness of the buns.
Make Ahead and Storage Instructions
This stale bun French toast is not something that I would recommend making ahead of time as pre-soaking the buns for too long will result in them becoming too soggy.
That and they are definitely best served warm and straight out of the buttery pan.
However, once your French toast has completely cooled down and you have not added any toppings, you can store it in an airtight container in the fridge for a day or two.

Instructions
- In a large bowl whisk eggs, add milk, sugar, vanilla essence, cinnamon and nutmeg and continue to whisk until combined.

- Transfer to serving plate, pour maple syrup, ice cream. Or substitute for fresh berries, whipped cream.
